Spawning

Foxes breed in groups of two to four in the taiga, old taiga, snow taiga, and forest biomes. 5% of them lay eggs as cubs. They can spawn on grass, coarse soil, podzol, snow mass, or top snow.

Foxes spawn in a snow biome that is white.

Hold Item

Foxes have a 20% chance of spawning (either through spawning or naturally) with one of the following items in their mouth:

Fox Items Minecraft

Drop

An adult fox drops 1–2‌[JE only]/1–3‌[BE] orbs of experience when killed by a player or tamed wolf. After successful breeding, 1–7 animals are discarded. Killing a cub gives no experience.

Foxes always drop any items they pick up and are still holding (e.g. they can’t drop food they’ve eaten) and drop items they spawn naturally with 100% probability, so :

Minecraft Fox Drops

If a fox is killed while holding an immortal totem, the fox will consume the totem and revive itself instead of dropping the totem.

Behavior

Foxes sometimes make loud hissing noises at night, unless a trusted player is near them. The young fox follows the adult fox.

During the night, foxes sometimes go to the village. Snow fox to snow village and red fox to any other type of village, preferably taiga village because foxes spawn in the taiga forest biome.

Foxes run away from wolves, polar bears, or nearby players unless the player approaches them while sneaking. They do not take damage or slow down when moving through sweet berry bushes.

Foxes attack chickens, rabbits, cod, trout, tropical fish and baby turtles when they are on land. Foxes do not attack wolves even if they are attacked by them.

Foxes attack by running backward or by pouncing. Like rabbits and goats, foxes can pounce more than one block higher without the need for status effects or player input. A fox lowers its body to become shorter and prepares to pounce by tilting and lowering its head. It then jumps two blocks into the air, jumping over fences and walls if needed. If the target crowd moves from its position in this sequence, the pounce will miss the target. In Bedrock Edition, foxes also swing to the sides before pouncing and wagging their paws in mid-air.

Red foxes prefer to attack chickens, rabbits and baby turtles, all of which are terrestrial, then cod, trout, and tropical fish; in contrast, snow foxes prefer to attack cod, trout, and tropical fish over terrestrial creatures.

A fox that plunges into the snow will get stuck momentarily, face down, emit particles when shaken, and return to normal shortly thereafter.

Swimming fox attacks fish in the water for food. Young foxes often follow their mothers and can also drown easily.

The fox tries to run towards the nearest attackable mob, even when attached to the clue, but does not attempt to break the clue. A fox wakes up from sleep to attack a mob.

Wild wolves are aggressive towards foxes when within 18‌[JE only]/16‌[BE only] blocks. In the Java Version, adult polar bears also sneak up on foxes to attack them; in Bedrock Edition, adult polar bears attack foxes within 16 blocks. In the Java Version, cubs, although usually passive to the player, also attempt to attack foxes within 16 blocks or when their adult polar bear attacks one.

Minecraft Fox Sleeping

Foxes are one of the few mobs they can sleep with:

  • Cat
  • Villager
  • Bats

During the day, if there is no thunderstorm, the fox will try to find a space with a brightness of 14 or less and sleep. Block light has no effect on this. While sleeping, it slowly moves its head up and down. when the player approaches they will wake up. Foxes do not run away until the player reaches an adjacent block.

If the skylight at the fox’s position becomes 15 or higher, due to a block above being destroyed or the fox being moved, the fox will wake up.

Foxes can drop and pick up items while they sleep.

Trust foxes can sleep even when attached to the head. They can also be moved by wire while sleeping.

Foxes do not sleep if they are within 12 blocks of the armor stand.

Sit

Sometimes foxes sit down during the day if they can’t find a shaded place to sleep. The fox sat for a moment and then jumped up. Foxes sit down even when attached to a conductor or in a boat. Foxes that have not been bred by the player always sit still while in the Nether, even when attached to a clue.

Holding items

If there are any items on the ground near a fox, that item will appear in the fox’s mouth by moving to the item and picking it up. Usually, however, a fox chooses to attack the mob to pick up an item. This behavior is not limited to animal products and foods; a fox can pick up any item the player picks up. However, they prefer to pick up food and if they have picked up non-food items, they will drop the non-food items to pick up food instead. A fox can also swap a food it is holding for another.

The fox is affected by any side effects from the food, and a fox eats any food it picks up after 30 seconds, such as poison or teleportation. For example, if a fox eats an enchanted golden apple, it will receive the absorption and effects of the enchanted apple. If a fox eats any kind of soup or stew, an empty bowl will be dropped. If a fox is holding a chorus, it will eat that fruit and teleport accordingly.

If there is a sweet mulberry bush at stage 3 or 4 within a 16 block radius of a fox, it will rush towards the bush and eat the berries, while dropping the item it is holding. It is the only mob that is not damaged by the sweet mulberry bush.

If a fox collects an enchanted item or a weapon, such as Looting and Fire Aspect, these items will affect the fox’s attacks. It is as if the fox is holding a weapon, although the item retains its durability when used by the fox. If a fox is holding an immortal totem, it will gain the following effects after taking critical damage. In Bedrock Version, if a fox wields a Fire Aspect enchanted sword while attacking a mob on a campfire or soul bonfire, it will ignite the campfire and critically damage the entity.

in Minecraft, Fox does not pick up items when mobGriefing game rule is set to false.

Breed of Fox

When sweet berries or glowing berries are used for two foxes, these foxes will spawn, giving birth to a fox cub. If a red fox is crossed with a snow fox, the child has a 50% chance of being red or snowy.

Domestication

Breeding two adults with sweet berries or glowing berries will produce a set the player believes in. The fox cub trusts the player who bred it and doesn’t run away from that player when it grows up; however, since cubs also follow nearby adult foxes, adults running away from the player can cause cubs to do the same.

Natural spawn kits don’t trust players. Foxes attack specific mobs hurting players they trust.

D (To keep the cubs from running away, a lead wire can be useful during this time, until it’s fully grown, and the player can kill them as an adult with a ranged weapon.

When wolves or polar bears attack the player, foxes will attack to protect the player. A fox trusts the player to run away from wolves and polar bears.

When attacking the ghost, the fox does not rush to attack.

When that fox doesn’t trust the player who tamed that wolf, a trusted fox will not attack a tamed wolf except .

The foxes trust the player to attack zombies, drowning, huskies, piglets, skeletons, wither skeletons, strays, ghosts, silverfish, endermites, spiders, cave spiders, vexes, vindicators, recallers, looters, ravages, blazes, endermen, goats and raccoons, when that mob attacks the player. They do not attack any mobs the player attacks, unlike tamed wolves. They also do not attack zombie villagers despite the fact that they are a zombie variant.

Domesticated foxes retreat from polar bears and wolves but not domesticated wolves. A tamed wolf whose owner attacks a tamed fox will also attack the fox.
