A beacon is a block in Minecraft that projects a beam skyward and can give beneficial status effects to players within a radius around it when placed on top of a solid pyramid base constructed from iron blocks, gold, diamond, emerald, or nephrite.
Obtaining
Break
Beacons can be successfully mined manually or with any tool. When destroyed by an explosion, that block always drops as an item.
Block: Beacon
- Hardness: 3
- Break time: Default 4.5 (seconds)
Make:
- Beacon = Glass + Nether Star + Obsidian
Using
In the Bedrock Version, the beacon can also be flooded and conduct redstone at the same time. The beacon blocks provide two unique functions when activated:
- A beam of landmarks reached the sky, visible from afar.
- Powers, which give the player status effects within a certain range.
Activated
The beacon must meet the following requirements for beacon activation, :
The beacon requires an unobstructed view of the sky.
Allow transparent blocks and background.
The lighthouse is located at the top of a pyramid built from:
- Iron blocks
- Ingoing
- Emerald block
- Diamond block
- Netherite block.
Pyramid
The pyramid is the necessary structure to activate the beacon. There are four possible pyramid heights. More pyramid levels generate more power in the wider affected neighborhood. The type of block used to build the pyramid, is a mineral that is purely cosmetic and has no functional effect. Several different types of blocks can be mixed together, without affecting their primary function. If damage to the pyramid causes the beacon to stop working, the previously established powers will resume their effects when reactivated when the pyramid is repaired. This also applies to piston-changing pyramids.
A single beacon pyramid:
Level: 1
- Mineral block: 9
- Materials: 81
- Layers: 3×3, beacon
Level: 2
- Mineral block: 34
- Materials: 306
- Layers: 5×5, 3×3, beacon
Level: 3
- Mineral block: 83 (1 stack + 19 blocks)
- Materials: 747
- Layers: 7×7, 5×5, 3×3, beacon
Level: 4
- Mineral block: 164 (2 stacks + 36 blocks)
- Materials: 1476
- Layers: 9×9, 7×7, 5×5, 3×3, beacon
Multiple beacons can use the same specific mineral block underneath them. Compound pyramids need not be symmetrical. The image on the right shows a pyramid of 6 beacons (2 x 3).
It requires:
A total of 244 mineral blocks with a base layer of 10 x 11.

Beam
When the beacon is activated, a beam immediately appears in a vertical direction, extending from the beacon block all the way to the top of the world.
In Java Version:
- Up to 256 blocks away, the beam is visible.
In Bedrock Version:
- The beam will be visible up to 64 blocks away, even if the display distance is set high.
You can change the color by:
Place the stained glass blocks anywhere above the beacon block.
The beam changes color, depending on the color of the glass placed above it: the first block sets the beam color,
while each additional block sets the color by averaging the components:
- Red
- Green
- Blue of current beam color
- Color of the block.
The color values are the same as those of the corresponding dye. This also works when using hard-stained glass and hard-stained glass tiles.[Bedrock and Minecraft Education editions only] Stained glass tiles have the same effect on the beam as stained glass blocks.
Power
Signaling GUI
After the beacon emits a beam, something happens:
- It can be loaded into an iron ingot
- Gold bar
- Emerald
- Diamonds or ingots
- Netherite
To select the status effects provided to the player within the beacon’s range.
The beacon GUI will do this, which is displayed by pressing use while looking at the beacon block. It doesn’t matter which item is included in the beacon.
In the GUI, the player places the item to be loaded into an empty slot and clicks on the effect from the “Main Strength” section on the left. If the beacon is on a 4-level pyramid, the “Extra Strength” section on the right will also work. The player can then choose to turn on a Renewable Source in addition to the Mains or raise the mains to Level II. The user clicks the “Done” button (green check mark), the item will be used and the source(s) will be activated. To change the strength of the beacon, the process must be repeated, consuming another ingot or gem.
If the pyramid is broken, the effects will stop working or weaken depending on the level of the incomplete pyramid. After recovering the pyramid, the original selected power will return without the need to consume another item.
The Five Key Powers are:
- Speed I: Increases movement speed.
- Haste I: Increases mining and attack speed.
- Resistance I: Reduces almost all damage taken (2 level pyramid required).
- Jump Boost I: Increases distance and height when jumping (2 level pyramid required).
- Strength I: Increases melee damage (3 level pyramid required).
The Secondary Powers available with the 4-level pyramid are:
- Regeneration I: Regeneration of health.
- Increase primary power to level II.
You can combine two different primary Level I powers:
- Select a main power source in the left panel
- Select the Level II option in the details panel on the right
- Select the second desired return source in the left panel
Only one of the two powers seems to be selected, even though both effects are active.
- Every four seconds,
- The selected powers will be applied for a duration of 9 seconds,
- Plus 2 seconds for each pyramid level,
- For all players in range.
- When the power is changed or the player goes outside the area of effect.
- The power will last for 5–9 seconds or 13-17 seconds with a full pyramid.
Limit
The square column area, facing down the Beacon will be affected and out each side at a range determined by the size of the base of the pyramid, upward a distance of that range + 384 blocks.
The simulated distance will limit the range of the beacon effect. As such, the effect will not reach blocks at the corners of the beacon range, above a simulated distance of 4 with a level 4 pyramid.
The distance from the player to the beacon block has no effect on the strength of the status effect.
Pyramid size – Effect range – Effect duration
- Level 1: 20(blocks) – 11(seconds)
- Level 2: 30(blocks) – 13(seconds)
- Level 3: 40(blocks) – 15(seconds)
- Level 4: 50(blocks) – 17(seconds)
Light source
- The beacon blocks can act as light sources, emitting level 15 light. Like other light sources, they melt ice.
Piston interaction
- Beacons cannot be pushed, by sticky pistons or pulled by pistons.
