Spawning

1-3 donkeys lay eggs in the plains and only 1 in the steppe. Donkeys also lay eggs in grasslands. 20% of the donkeys give birth to ponies.

Platform version

2-6 donkeys spawn only in plains with light level 7 or higher.

Appearance

Adult donkeys are 1.4 blocks wide and long and 1.6 blocks tall. The ponies start out at half the size of an adult, and in the Bedrock Edition, they grow larger as they age. Unlike wolves and cats, donkeys’ appearance does not change once they have been tamed, although tamed donkeys can be distinguished by equipping them.

The surrounding donkeys are smaller than normal horses and have long, erect ears. Their mane does not protrude but is drawn straight behind the head and neck. All donkeys have gray-brown fur with darker ankles, ears, mane, and tail. Donkeys can be equipped with non-full cover armor like a simple saddle, and hold up to 15 item drawers since they’re 1–3, can be equipped with chests.

Unlike most other mobs, donkeys equipped with saddles or chests do not display these when under the effect of Invisibility.

Drop

When dead, donkey release:

  • 0–2 Skin. The maximum amount is increased by 1 for each level of Robbery, up to a maximum of 0-5 with Loot III.
  • 1–3, when killed by a tamed wolf or player.

If equipped with chests or saddles, they will drop those items. They also drop items in chests.

  • After successful propagation, 1–7 are discarded.
  • Killing a donkey gives neither items nor experience.

Using of Donkey

Tamed and saddled donkeys are some of the fastest transports or towing vehicles in the game, though they can’t squeeze through single openings across the block. They can also be used to climb hills and jump fences, which the player usually cannot do.

Donkeys cannot float on water when controlled by a player. Their ability is to be able to be ridden in water up to 2 blocks deep. In deeper water, the player will automatically dismount.

Donkeys can be equipped with chests and used as cargo animals. They can also be pulled and tied with a cord.

Device

Domesticated donkeys may have the following available positions:

  • Saddle Slot: To equip a saddle.
  • Add 15 inventory slots, as long as the donkey is equipped with a chest.

Holding down the left shift key, the device can be placed on the donkey by then using it on the donkey.

Donkey’s inventory can be accessed by:

  • Use inventory control
  • Ride a donkey or

Sneak and then use or press the “open inventory” button on the donkey.

A donkey can be equipped with a chest using the chest on the donkey. Chests cannot be obtained if:

  • You don’t kill the donkey,
  • Cause the chest inside to drop
  • Things inside fell out.

Foals cannot be equipped with anything.

Riding

Once a donkey is tamed and saddled, the player can control it using standard directional, jumping, and mouse controls. The player descends with the down control. Like riding other entities, the player cannot use the link portal or the end portal while riding a donkey.

A saddled donkey will automatically run up any steep incline. Donkeys and riders can fit safely in spaces as low as 2.75 blocks high. The lower ground clearance risks suffocating the driver if the driver’s head falls into a non-transparent block. The donkey itself can enter gaps as low as 1,625 blocks, but itself can suffocate when the gap is less than 1.75 blocks.

All donkeys are born with the same movement speed and jump power, they are not the same as horses, although being able to use speed potions on donkeys and moving through the Nether can make donkeys easily become Become a pack animal with the fastest realistic moves in Minecraft. The trick moves slowly backwards and as fast as the player moves sideways.

Horse-riding donkeys have the ability to “jump charge”. When the player rides them, the experience bar on the HUD is replaced by a jumping charge bar. A saddled donkey can be made to jump and hold the charge for a higher jump. Donkeys are not affected by beacons or potions that increase jump speed.

Donkey Behavior

The donkey wanders about, occasionally stopping behind, wagging its tail or lowering its head as if eating grass. Unlike sheep, the eating animation doesn’t actually cause any grass to be consumed. The donkey can turn to look at the player approaching. Any donkey, even a wild donkey, allows himself to be attached to a leash without protest. However, if the player tries to saddle an untamed donkey, it will get up and swing its hooves first. Donkeys remain passive, even when hit.

Donkeys sometimes make a pleasant bleating sound.

Adult donkeys, unlike most mobs, cannot ride mines and boats. Foals, however, can. Unlike other passive mobs, trick restores health slowly.

Taming

Adult donkeys can be tamed. With an empty hand, attach it several times; when it shows hearts and no longer gives the player money, it has been tamed. A donkey needs to be tamed to breed it, equip it, or ride it for any length of time.

The taming depends on the “temperament” of the donkey. They start with a mood of 0 out of 100. When the player rides the donkey, a random number between 0 and 99 will be chosen. The donkey becomes tame if the number is less than the normal number, otherwise the donkey will increase by 5 and the player will be disqualified. Temperament can also be increased by feeding donkeys.

When riding an untamed donkey, one can hear the sound of galloping, more or less rapidly. Get a general idea of the donkey’s speed. It is unknown if there are any indications of jump heights prior to taming.

Like all domesticated animals, death notices will be displayed to their owners if they are killed.[Bedrock version only]

Breed

Feeding tamed golden apples or golden carrots to donkeys will activate love mode.

Females look slimmer than their adult versions and grow larger over time until they reach full size. Children do not automatically belong to the player who owns their parent. Instead, it must be tamed after it matures and is born as an untamed donkey. Ponies can be fed to mature faster.

Breeding two donkeys produces a colt. The female looks exactly like her parents when she is fully grown, as all donkeys have the same texture, .

Crossing a donkey with a horse produces a mule horse. Mules cannot reproduce.

Food

Feeding a donkey can change its behavior and cause it to grow (if it’s immature; ponies usually take 20 minutes to reach full maturity if not fed) and restore its health. To feed the donkey, hold a valid dish and press use while looking at it. If the food is invalid, the action is considered an attempt to ride a donkey. Donkeys can only be fed when feeding will work, just like other animals. The table below lists the effects of different foods that donkeys can consume.

Statistics

See also: Tutorial/Horse

All donkeys have three “horse stats” that differ between donkeys: health, (maximum) movement speed, and jumping power. These stats are generated after the donkey is spawned or spawned and are not affected by food.

Reproductive value

When spawned in any way except spawning:

  • Using commands
  • natural reproduction
  • Spawns as part of a skeleton trap
  • Using spawn eggs

These Mobs are assigned their stats within a certain range, which is specific to their horse type.

Health

The health ranges from 15–30, but tends to average 22–23. Hearts shown are health, halved, rounded down. A donkey with an odd health score (15, 17, 19, etc.) will not show the last half of the heart. If the donkey loses one point less health than the damage dealt and doesn’t heal, it has an odd number of health points, otherwise, it has an even number of health points.

Movement speed

The speed value of a spawned donkey is always 0.175, but it only moves at a slight decrease of 7.38 blocks/second. For reference, a player’s typical walking speed is 0.1, which equates to 4.3 blocks/second. and the player’s sprint speed is equivalent to 5.6 blocks/second. The listed speed does not include any status effects that affect the speed of the horse or the player.

The speed value of a crossbred donkey has the same limit as other horses, between 0.1125 and 0.3375. Watch Horse#Move speed.

See shipping to compare the speeds of different shipping methods.

Jumping Power

The jump force of a spawned donkey is always 0.5, which is enough to overcome 1 9⁄16 blocks. The jumping power of a crossbred donkey is limited like other horses, between 0.4 and 1.0. See Tutorial/Horse#Speed.

Breeding value

When crossing two donkeys, the foal’s index is determined by averaging
