Skeletons and Strays
- Skeletons and strays have an 8.5% chance to drop a normal bow or enchanted bow on death when killed by the player or a tamed wolf.
- Bow drop chance increases by 1% for each level of Loot, allowing the chance to drop up to 11.5%.
- The chances of being enchanted depend on the difficulty, whether it’s normal or hard. The enchantment level is equivalent to enchantment level 5-22.
- Bone trap bows are always enchanted at levels 5 to 23. The exact level depends on the difficulty of the area, as on Easy it is always a level 5 enchantment.
Illusioners
Illusions have an 8.5% chance to drop an uncharted bow when killed by a player. Bow drop chance increases by 1% for each level of Loot, allowing the chance to drop up to 11.5%.
Crafting
Trading
- The Fletcher villagers grant apprentices selling bows for 2 emeralds as part of their trade.
- Expert-level fletcher villagers sell enchanted bows for 7–21 emeralds as part of their trade. Enchantment level is equal to enchantment level 5–19.
Fishing
Bow has a chance to be caught when fishing. When captured, the bow can be damaged and contains random enchantments equivalent to level 30 enchantments from the enchantment table, including treasure enchantments such as Mending.

Weapon
Bows can be retracted using them. To use a bow, a player must have at least one arrow in their inventory or be in Creative mode. The arrow displayed inside the bow always looks like a regular arrow, no matter what type of arrow was actually fired from the bow.
When drawing an arc, the screen zooms in a bit. Charging the bow to the max causes it to vibrate visually as an indicator. Release the button to fire an arrow. The arc drawing can be canceled by switching to another hotbar slot while holding in use.
While the bow is being charged or remains fully charged, the player is forced to move at a fast speed, unless they are riding a horse, mine cart or boat, or flying by elytra. Cannot sprint while reloading or holding a drawn bow. When the bow is released, normal movement will continue even though any previous sprints are aborted. Sneaking while drawing the bow causes the player to move slower.
If an arrow hits another player, the player who shoots the arrow will hear a high-pitched “ding” sound.[Java version only]
Fully charged shots launch crit arrows with particle trails behind and deal damage after any enchantments. However, the critical damage can be more around 8-10; Critical damage is added at a random value between and rarely has a minimum or maximum value. The final damage dealt may be less than the maximum damage if the arrow slows down after firing.
Damage
The game stores arrow damage even in decimal point values.
For example:
- A critical arrow can deal damage values like 6.4. In the event of this corrupted value, the game can round up or down and store that amount for further damage sources.
Any projectile thrown by the player is affected by momentum in current versions of Minecraft. Naturally, the player’s movement speed can be modified in some cases, affecting the ballistic trajectory of the projectile and the resulting arrow damage.
During the Java Version Combat Tests, in order to avoid sniping, arrows fired from a fully charged bow became non-dangerous if held for longer than three seconds. Instantaneous effects on the slanted arrows are scaled 1/8, the same as the duration of the other effects.
For example:
- Instant Damage Arrow I deals 0.75 extra health × 0.375 magic damage.
Damage dealt by arrows is not affected by the Power effect.
Because the arrow disappears when the Enderman teleports, the Enderman cannot be shot with an arrow, or it is deflected. Even when immobile, the enderman is immune to damage from arrows. However, an arrow fired from a Fire-enchanted bow can ignite the Enderman.

Enchanted
Bows can receive a number of different enchantments and have a base enchanting ability of 1. The labyrinth enchantment does not affect the arrow speed or the distance it travels. In the Bedrock Version, if a bow is enchanted with any level 1 enchantment, it always gains Strength I.
Arrow
- A flying arrow in Minecraft is affected by gravity just like in real life. Its vertical speed is varied by one block downwards per second, resulting in a parabolic flight path. An arrow will slow down if shot through water, reducing its damage to near zero unless sent back into the air or have other momentum.
- Arrows that hit solid blocks are stuck and can be retrieved, unless the arrow is shot by an Infinity enchanted bow, a Creative player, or a mob.
- An arrow shot through lava will ignite, giving it the effect of the Flame enchantment, igniting any entity it touches. If not extinguished, the flame deals up to 4 health damage. Although a withered skeleton doesn’t spawn naturally with a bow, if it wields a bow it also shoots flaming arrows.
- On impact, an arrow can activate a wooden press, target block, wooden button or tripod. Arrows cannot activate stone pressure plates or rock buttons.
- The player can choose the type of arrow to shoot based on its position in the inventory. Arrows on the backhand, or the selected hotbar position if the bow is on the backhand, take precedence. If no arrow in the Hotbar position is selected or to the left, the arrow closest to position 0 will be selected.
