Using chests is a common thing in the game. When you have some chests, you can contain various items and bring them in an easy way. However, vanilla chests seem not to be much optimized. Therefore, you are recommended to use some iron chests.
The iron chests given by the Storage mod above give you more capacity to contain your items. Besides, you can place the chests next to each other.
When you put them next to each other, they are single chests. This eliminates the required 1-block gap that you experienced with double chests. Obsidian chests are the only chests that have grown blast resistance.
The chests in the mod are the chests for lots of metals in vanilla Minecraft. They also come in different sizes.
For version 1.13, the custom shulker boxes have been taken to their mod which is Iron Shulker Boxes.

How to install:
Make sure you have already installed Minecraft Forge.
Locate the Minecraft application folder.
- Open Run from the start menu.
- Type %appdata%, click Run.
Input where Iron Chests Mod you have just downloaded (.jar file) into the Mods folder.
When you open Minecraft, you see the Iron Chests Mod is installed when click the button mods
