Hunger Overhaul

About the Hunger Overhaul Mod Wiki

The mod aims to improve the Food aspect of Minecraft when it relates to the hunger stat. By using the mod, you can change the hunger mechanics to your likings in a simple way.

When you make changes to the hunger mechanics, the hunger stat becomes more challenging. This also adds more excitement to the game.

This mod is made by Iguanaman and it is maintained by ProgWML6, Alexbegt, Squeek502, and Parker8283. It is quite modular. So, you can turn it on/off or change its features in the config file.

There are also some mods that are supported by this mod, for instance:

  • HarvestCraft (highly recommended for a full experience)
  • WeeeFlowers
  • Natura

Features of Hunger Overhaul

Here are all features that you will experience in the mod:

The replenishment values of the rebalanced food

  • Food that is not prepared yet, like raw crops or meat, will refill half a hunger shank.
  • For drops and meat that are already cooked, they refill one full hunger shank.
  • The replenishment value for light meals, like soups, toast, etc., is approximately 2 hunger shanks.
  • The replenishment value for average meals, like a baked potato, hamburger, etc., is 3-4 hunger shanks.
  • For large meals, they can refill around 5 hunger shanks.

There is a decrease in the food value and saturation of foods from other mods

  • For the foods from other mods, their value is nerfed, around a quarter of food value and saturation.
  • However, you must set “modifyFoodStats” and “modifyFoodValues” to be true.
  • You can configure them with the “modFoodValueDivider” config setting.

Food now has tooltips

  • By looking at the tooltip, you will understand the food value as well as the saturation value of the food.
  • Here are some examples: snacks, nourishing meals, and more.

Hunger Overhaul shows a new GUI text when you are low on health or hunger

  • It is shown in the top left (health) and top right (hunger) corners.
  • There is a warning system that is color-coded (White).
  • You can turn it off in the config file.

You obtain a “Well Fed” effect when you eat food, growing your health regen

  • If you eat a larger meal, you will use the effect longer.
    • If it is a light meal (food value 4), it will last 40 seconds.
    • If it is a meal (food value 7), it will last 2 minutes.
    • If it is a large meal (food value 20), it will last 4 minutes.
    • If it is a feast (food value 14), it will last 8 minutes.
  • In case you stack your meal, like eating two meals, the time will be doubled. You can have the effect for 4 minutes.
  • The boost growing the speed of heath refills by around 33%. For instance, it takes 6 seconds to heal a heart rather than 8 seconds.
    • This only leaves an impact on base health regen. Hence, if you are low on hunger, it will not heal.
  • You only take effect if you turn on “modifyFoodStats” in the config file.

The hunger value of food decides the maximum stack size

  • In the Hunger Overhaul mod, if you have the larger meal, you will carry less.

Food value decides the eating speed

  • If you have a larger meal, you have to spend a long time eating it.
  • You can eat morsels and snacks faster than in vanilla.
  • For the light meals, they are around the same as vanilla.

Some changes for animals to decrease output

  • There is a 4x longer period of time in delaying between chickens laying eggs (you can configure it with “eggTimeoutMultiplier”).
  • There is also a 4x longer period of time in delaying the breeding timeout (you can configure it with “breedingTimeoutMultiplier”).
  • The time for a child to be mature takes 4x longer (you can configure it with “childDurationMultiplier”).

About modifications to crops in Hunger Overhaul

In this Food mod, there are also some changes that are made to crops:

  • You can right-click crops when they are completely grown.
    • By doing so, you can collect them then replant them.
  • You collect the product and the crops will remain.
  • Crops only grow throughout the daytime, not when they are under the torchlight.
  • The period of time for the crops to grow is longer.
  • You only get the planted seeds back from the crops. There are no extras.
    • However, you can still obtain seeds if you punch some grass.

HarvestCraft integration

Hunger Overhaul mod can be integrated with HarvestCraft to bring players a better experience.

  • If the mod is integrated with HarvestCraft village, you can trade HarvestCraft food.
    • Farmer villagers can purchase crop produce.
    • Butcher villagers can sell foods of high tier.
  • If the mod is integrated with HarvestCraft chest loot, you can find HarvestCraft food as chest loot.
    • This also includes the chests that you can find in places such as dungeons, mineshafts, desert, or jungle temples.
    • It only contains foods of high tier (for a large meal and above).
    • Balancing is probably required for the chance of items to show.

The way the hoes function is changed

Hunger Overhaul also makes changes to the way the hoes function in Minecraft.

  • If you use hoes on dirt and water that is nearby, you can till the dirt as normal.
  • If you use hoes on grass and there is no water nearby, it will change grass to dirt and make a random seed.
  • The chance of speed is based on the difficulty (from 10-40% for each try, which can be configured).
  • You can turn it off in the config file with “modifyHoeUse”.

About tall grass

  • If you smash tall grass, it does not give you seeds anymore.
  • You can turn it off in the config file with “removeTallGrassSeeds”.

There are no recipes for wood and stone hoes in Hunger Overhaul

  • The recipes for wood and stone hoes are eliminated.
  • Iron is required before you can obtain seeds or begin the first farm unless you search for a village.
  • You can turn it off in the config file using “removeHoeRecipies”.

The mod also makes changes to the hoe durability

  • The durability of hoe is now 1/5th of vanilla.
  • Iron has 52 uses
  • Diamond has 314 uses.
  • You can configure it using “hoeToolDamageMultiplier”.

The difficulty setting decides the effects of bonemeal on crops

  • If it is in the peaceful or easy mode, it is the same as vanilla.
  • If it is in the normal mode, the growth effect is decreased.
  • If it is in the hard mode, there will be no effect.
  • You can turn it off in the config file using “difficultyScalingBoneMeal”.

The hunger is lost constantly

  • The Hunger stat in the Hunger Overhaul mod will be lost constantly even though you don’t do anything.
  • As time goes by, the hunger decreases at a slow speed.
  • You can turn it off in the config file.

The difficulty decides the hunger value set upon respawn

  • You can set the hunger value upon respawning, even the first spawn, based on the difficulty settings.
  • If it is in the peaceful or easy mode, it is similar to vanilla (10 shanks).
  • If it is in the normal mode, it will be 8 shanks.
  • If it is in the hard mode, it will be 6 shanks.
  • You must set “modifyFoodStats” to be true.
  • You can configure it in the config file using some settings such as:
    • respawnHungerValue (20): You set the value hunger on the peaceful or easy difficulty.
    • respawnHungerDifficultyModifier (4): The amount of difficulty will change the value above.
    • difficultyScalingRespawnHunger(true): If the difficulty changes respawn hunger or not.

The healing of your health

  • Your health heals as your hunger is more than 3 shanks even though it is slow a bit.
    • Hence, you don’t have to eat something once you have lost some shanks.
  • It is meaningless to have food recovering a large amount of hunger when you must stay at maximum hunger to heal your health.
  • The hunger can be decreased to around halfway prior to eating.
  • The healing progress is at a slower speed when your health is lower.

Hunger Overhaul makes low health bring negative effects

  • Some negative effects are slowness, the slowdown of mining speed, and weakness.
  • The difficulty setting decides the strength of the effect and starts.
  • You can disable every effect in an individual way in the config file.

The difficulty leaves an effect on the hunger loss and healing rate

  • For easy/peaceful difficulty, it is 75% speed.
  • For normal difficulty, it is 100% speed.
  • For hard difficulty, it is 150% speed.

The speed of hunger loss is affected by the installation of HarvestCraft

  • When you install HarvestCraft, it grows the hunger loss speed, making it 33% faster.
    • This is because it is quite easier to find food.

Negative effects from low hunger

  • You will have negative effects when you are low on hunger.
  • The slowness begins when you have 3 shanks left. The negative effect starts to grow when you starve.
  • When your shanks are under 2, you will have the mining speed slowdown and weakness.

Meeting your end when your hunger is zero

  • When your hunger is zero, you will meet your end instantly.
    • However, this is made up by the lower hunger levels that take longer to drain.

Hunger Overhaul makes the hunger mechanics in Minecraft more interesting. You can use the mod in your favorite modpack.

Requirements:
